I can think if at least 4 times that the first 3 (in real world time) Star Wars were released to video. 3 times on VHS and one time on DVD. How many times did YOU actually by the new versions? I bought the once on VHS as a gift for my brother, once as a later box set for my brother and finally in DVD. I scoffed at it the last time it came out on VHS with added scenes and decided to wait for the DVD release.

OH, let's see if I can remember this. I bought episode 4,5, and 6 as soon as they were released to video. Then when they came out as the boxed set with the new footage, we bought that, and we bought another boxed set and didn't open it, to keep as a collector's item. I have a collection, luckily my oldest is turning to be a fan, too, so I will pass it on to him and he can either sell it or keep it, whichever he chooses. I SAW episode well over 150 times, that's when I lost count. Most was after school, I watched it every day for at least 4 months before my parents got mad at me. I have many lines memorized. Episode 5 I've seen probably about 80 times, also have lines memorized. Episode 6, probably about 100 times, not too sure, never counted those. Yes, I'm a fanatic, it's such an illness!

I saw Star Wars on re-release in the theatre. I saw Empire Strikes back twice in the theater, the first time and the re-release. I saw Return of the Jedi in the theater the first time. I bought the remastered versions on VHS and I have the current DVDs.

3 times so far...first release on VHS, the Special Edition (improved audio/picture no added scenes), then the DVDs. Now with the true originals coming out on DVD in September...that will be the 4th. sigh. I know Lucas prefers all these added scenes and such, but I loved the originals.

Definitely watch 4-6 first. For a first-time Star Wars watcher, they make a lot more sense that way. Plus, if you started at episode 1...you might get the wrong impression of Star Wars (its horrible compared to the others). With the original books, read them in the same order, for the same reasons. Some major book stores (books-a-million, etc.) have them, but libraries almost always have them. If none of your book stores have them, and you want to buy, not rent them, try online. If you enjoy the movies and books, I recommend reading the Expanded Universe books (books written by other authors but still approved by Lucas). Start with the Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn. Good luck, and I hope you enjoy them.

One boxed set on VHS (episodes 4,5 and 6) and that's it! I still have to get the first three episodes on DVD.

And I apologize to George Lucas if this offends him, but for crying out loud, could he have made the episode situation ANY more confusing? Episode 1 chronologically is the 4th one in theaters, and the 5th episode was the second in..........
