Families gain comfort from those who come to pay respects to the deceased...it is the most important popularity contest of our lives...by attend you are saying that this person had touched your life in one way or another...even if it was just as a coworker...and that is something the family will remember.

It would depend on if I knew any of the people that they left behind. There are really only 2 reasons why a person goes to a funeral:
1. To pay their respects and say their final good-bye to the deceased. Which I can only see doing if you were at least fairly close with the person.
2. To offer support to the family and friends they left behind.
If neither of these apply to you, I see no reason in attending.

Yea it feels good to give support. I went to this young woman's funeral I never met but it was my boyfriends cousin. Just being there and hearing what a wonderful person she was from everybody there that knew her made me cry. Losing a loved one is so hard the more support you get the better you will feel.

Probably. It's generally considered a polite show of respect. But, when you think about it really, it is a tad strange since you really don't 'know' the person and aren't directly affected by their death. In that sense, it isn't truly genuine since it stems chiefly from a desire to project an appearance that is socially approved of.

It would be un-natural not to. Would you rather have someone you hardly knew not come to your funeral. there are only a few degrees of separation between the peoples of the world, don't sever them.

Why not. I would go to the funeral of someone I never knew, if I knew someone else who was close with them in order to show my support and love.

Yes, I would. Although I am very uncomfortable at funerals, I would still show respect to someone who had passed because just because I had known them at one time.

Yes, Think about it that's the last time you will get to see/be with them. A brief moment of your life to celebrate anothers won't hurt you.

I would go to the wake, receiving friends, whatever... the funeral is not required if you weren't close....
