If you are talking about table salt (NaCl) then hydration is the right answer. That is why Gatorade carries salt. In the case of soda, it acts as a preservative. Bacteria does not like high salt concentration environments. Moreover, salt (not necessarily NaCl) is what allows whater to carry electricity. Salt are very hygroscopic molecules; that means they love water. Even more importantly, there are several enzymes within our bodies that need some sort of monovalent or divelent cation (this is more specific when it comes to biochemistry). So, some enzymes will not work at excellent rate without their salt molecule (again, not necessarily Na - sodium). In conclusion, salt is important for our organism functions. Without salt, KAPUT! and with too much, KAPUT -- hart attack... KEEP AWAY FROM SODAS!!!

You need a certain amount of salt in your body to help you retain water and stay hydrated. But be careful because too much can be bad for you too!
