Xanadu or Shangdu () was the summer capital of Kublai Khan's Mongol Empire, which covered much of Asia. Archeological findings assert that the city was situated in the present-day Inner Mongolia of China. The capital consisted of the square-shaped "Outer City", "Inner City" and the palace, where Kublai Khan stayed in summer. The palace is believed to have been half the size of Forbidden City in Beijing (China).

In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree :
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.

So twice five miles of fertile ground
With walls and towers were girdled round :
And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,
Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree ;
And here were forests ancient as the hills,
Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.
