My mom is wanting me to stay at home until college so that she will continue to receive child support from my father. I'm not getting the money and yet I'm suffering. I need to know if there is a way for me to get the money directly instead of it going to her.

Okay, I really need help with this. I've been in and out of courts since I was 12. I am 17 almost 18 years old and a high school graduate with Academic Honors. VaTreasures--> My mom is taking the child suport money and going to the bar with it. She barely makes rent and there are several bills she does not pay. Heat, phone, internet. We go without very well. I haven't had a phone or internet since 8th grade. The only reason I'm on the net i because I'm staying at my boyfriend's family's place. My mom isn't putting it into a college fund for me, the state is paying most of my college and I have to get a loan for the rest which my mom won't pay. I am getting myself through college. Mom just fills out the FAFSA form. I just thought you should know so that I can get more and better informed answers. Thank you and I hope I wasn't to bitchy but as you can tell, I'm a little worked up about the situation.

The reason your mother is getting the money is to provide for you. Some of the money is probably going towards basics like food and shelter. It might be that these necessities are taking most of the money, and there is not as much you would like to spend on things that are not necessities.

If your mother is spending child support money on herself, that is wrong. If there is excess she should be putting it in an account for your use when you are an adult.

It may also be that she is putting the extra money in a college account.

If you are at least 14 or 15 you are old enough to be aware of some financial realities. You should ask your mother in a non-confrontational manner, how is the money in the household spent.

I don't know how old you are or what your situation is but you might be able to ask for a custody change or sue for emancipation.
