True, there have been racial problems regarding school admissions, employment, etc., but so much has changed since then. Is affirmative still necessary to maintain equality or is it starting to work opposite of its purpose? For example, college admissions can be unfair to those who deserve to be admitted in favor of others who don't deserve it as much based on their race because of affirmative action. What do you think?

ok I am Asian-Chinese and yes, I know how my ancestors were treated here in the past (railroad building, racism, treated as slaves, etc. for those of you who don't know) but I am against affirmative action now, what happened to Dawarnism? May the best (wo)man win? For those who answered "you're against affirmative action because you're white", well I'm not white and I'm STILL against affirmative action. Plainly, it SUCKS to have to compete with people who don't know CRAP and will end up dropping whatever they were chosen to do because they don't know what they're doing! And it's costing us a lot economically to be employing ppl who do a mediocre job vs. those who can do a much better job just because of affirmative action...ah, what has the world come to? if you can't do it, then you can't! don't wine about it and sue the company for being racist! (sorry if I offend anyone)

Affirmative action is beginning to give the minority groups an unfair advantage over non-minorities. Perfect example: Employment, most government agencies hire based on a points system. The applicant with the most points gets the job. Points are awarded based on interviews, exams, etc., but most employers automatically give minorities a few extra points just for being a minority. When you look at it like this one can see that affirmative action is really nothing but racism, which is what it was meant to eliminate.

when it comes to college admissions, why do the evaluators even know the race of the applicant? It should be irrelevant. Affirmative action is discrimination. Plus it makes people resent those who they work with who they think got the job due to affirmative action. I know a few white male friends of mine who feel they shouldn't even bother applying at some companies because they are white males. I always believe that the most qualified applicant should get the position, no matter what.

Afirmative Action is wrong. This is America where the best should reap the rewards of their labor. In Texas today however, afirmative action is alive and well. It will not go away. The government in its effort to be politically correct wants to keep racism alive by perpetuating racist policies against many people who are more deserving. This not only includes college admissions, it also includes all government jobs and public service jobs. It forces free enterprise to comply with fines for non-compliance. We can complain all we want, but its not going away. If there is any consolation to the majority out there you should know that still the majority of minorities are still not taking advantages of their advantages. With drop out rates the highest among minorities they condemn themselves to a lifelong list of minimum wage jobs. These are statistics, not opinion. In closing I'm really frustrated by the fact that a person who speaks out against afirmative action is automatically called a racist. With this tag, they justify discounting rational comments.

It's come to a point where being a young white man is politically incorrect. Why are we paying for past indiscretions that had nothing to do with us? Affirmative action is racism now, not equality.

No it is and was a worthless Idea that someone came up with to promote hiring of someone with in a particular race. I have no problem hiring any particular race if they can do the job so be it race doesn't play in my eyes, the qualified candidate does. Can you work with someone who because of race was hired in above you and didn't know anything about the job? Same goes for colleges.

What an amazing argument Nicki. I totally think that affirmative action is necessary now! If it's too hard to explain, that must mean it's awesome.

No. And it was never a good idea in the first place. It is a typical example for closing the whole in a sinking ship by ripping timber off another part of the hull.

I'm a woman, I'm latin... and I'm totally against it, it has no reason to exist, the best one has to get the job, period. There are already laws against racism and discrimination, follow them.
