the statuette is of a knight holding a sword. A common tale about the naming is that the librarian of the Academy said the statue looked like her Uncle Oscar and thereafter that was what it was called.

It just self congratulations for the movie industry, and a ploy to sell more tickets.
If you look at last years winners they were movies that few people had seen.
It's all hype, like the Golden Globes, the Emmys, oh you know them all, it's almost endless these days.
