This is the only thing I could find on his speed:

"First pitch, Satchel throws a 90 mph fast ball, letter high. Boom, strike one," said O'Neil. "Then he throws a 95 mph fast ball belt high. Boom, strike two. Then Satchel says,'Now Josh, I got you two strikes and no balls and I'm supposed to knock you down. But I'm not gonna throw smoke at your yoke, instead I'm gonna throw a pea at your knee.' He throws a knee-high fastball that must have been 100 mph. Josh looks at the third strike. We're walking off the field and Satchel says to me, "No one hits Satchel Paige's fastball." I said, 'I guess you're right.'

That's typical of anecdotal gibberish from old ***** League players who also claim Cool Papa Bell once hit a line drive up the middle and hit himself sliding into 2nd. It is thought Satch threw in the low 90s, maybe mid 90s when he reached back in his prime. Pitchers generally didn't throw as hard as they could in those days because they pitched very 4th day and were expected to finish the majority of their games. A guy who threw 90 MPH then was considered a fireballer. Today that would be mostly a pitch to contact guy. They paced themselves and the average fastball then was likely around 85 MPH- it's closer to 90 today. His control and ability to change speeds had more to do with his success than pure speed,
