Literally, a bridge is needed to level the travel. If it is burned [destroyed], the next time the area is traveled, it will be a tough hike.
Among people, the bridge is the relationship. If the relationship is destroyed, people are damaged. The next people, in either of the "burned folks" lives, may catch some of the fire that has not been distinguished in the previous relationship.

Burning a bridge means to cut ties with a person or relationship in a bad manner so as to not make reconcilation easy. For instance there is a song called "Take This Job and Shove It." The person who sang that song burned the bridge with his old employer by telling them to stick the job you know where.

Where you screw someone over and theres no repairing the friendship - or two people. Thats in a 311 song.
Once you burn a bridge theres no getting back to the other side.

It means you better be really sure about what you're doing and where you're heading, cause you just made it so that you can never return, not even to patch things up.
