i get internet via cable/LAN.so my pc is part of a small local workgroup.i have no shared files on it but is this enough to keep my privacy? can anyone from the workgroup access my computer? should i password protect it and HOW to do that?

Yes anyone on your workgroup (with reasonable knowledge) can access your computer and can also sniff all your exchanges with the Internet including your mail PASSWORDS.
Password protect ur PC, change the default administrator, use encryption and firewall.

Your workgroup name should be unique. As long as its extremely unique, it acts like a password because noone can connect to your network unless they are using the same ISP connection as you and as long as they know the workgroup name. Also, you should be able to check if anyone has connected to your network by clicking on Network places.

You can also just right click on the file you want to make private and go to properties. Use the encrypt checkbox to set up some extra settings on it. You can even set a password on your router, if you have a wireless router, in case someone decides to share your connection.

first make sure your administrator account, and all other accounts have GOOD passwords
