There are several methods.
You can use eye contact in an attempt to direct another's line of sight.
You can create a diversion.
You can think about something really, really sad to try and soften things up.
Lastly, like in the movie Anchorman, you can "walk it off".

I try to walk around with a clipboard at all times. Shopping, driving, walking, jogging, sitting, always a clipboard. I have a little hook on my belt buckle that the clipboard attaches to, when walking it slaps the area in question, hence the term spanking the monkey.

sitting down and crossing your legs helps hide it.
if you have a backpack or jacket/sweater, then you put it on your lap. same if you are over at someone's house, you grab a pillow off the couch and use it to hide your physical thoughts.

It hasn't happened to me in a long time, but when it did, I would use whatever was at my disposal. School book, jacket, the pretty girl in front of me.... It was rough when it happened during the summer, out of school, with no pretty girl in sight!
