A few thoughts:
Americans when travelling are often loud and brash and voice opinions without much knowledge - the people in the rest of the world are mostly ignorant but they are too shy to display it.
Most of the world hates success and however huge the poverty and predjudice is the States it is still the powerhouse economically and militarily.
The rags-to-riches American Dream does happen. In the rest of the world, however much money you acquire you will not break through the social barriers whether based on class, caste, or religion.

It's because there are some Americans (not all, I realize) who actually believe the world i.e. the planet earth was made for there use. They can do whatever they want to the world and not have to share. They actually believe that their views and opinions are the only ones that count. Please do not take this as America bashing. I like most Americans (I'm Canadian). I'm targeting the ones who fit into the selfish category, not all Americans. Unfortunately for the rest of the world, there are others in different nations who think the same.

Because by and large they ARE ignorant. Most Americans are more concerned about their SUV's and who's going to kicked off the island this week on "Survivor" than the fact that their government is turning their country into a police state. Obviously, Mr Bush, you are a shining example of American ignorance if you even have to ask the question.

Because the media tells that is the way it is and we should believe it. Unless you have been around the world a bit and met people you wouldn't know any different. We are programed every day to believe crap that is not true.
