Smoke lingers on clothing and can exacerbate asthma (especially in children) even from a distance! Second hand cigarette smoke is 10 times more deadly than just smoking the cigarette itself (and cigar smoke is even worse) and can linger for hundreds of feet. It even travels under closed doors and into peoples lungs. Even outside it can still travel pretty far too. It has been banned on many play grounds and public common areas here. Many of the hospitals here where I live/work have also switched over to laws stating NO SMOKING on the premise allowed--at anytime by patients or visitors! So sorry but you need to understand that you are hurting other people, hurting their lungs and arteries (which increases their chance of having a stroke) even worse than your own in most case scenarios.Smoke all you want in your own personal space no one will say anything and it will only be your own body you eventually damage beyond repair if you choose.Good luck with that and Have a good day!

There is a need to respect the wishes of others when it comes to smoking. I feel invasive when I am around others and I want to smoke. Amazingly enough, I've restricted my smoking to my home. I never smoke in public (I should quit).
I do find the protestations invalid, however. You're observant when you point out that others have addictions of their own. If you quantify the amount of fuel emissions a vehicle can generate in the same length of time that a cigarette burns, the results will startle you. If people realized how damaging the burning of fossil fuels were, they could, invariably, become down on drivers.

I would much rather be around smokers than drunks!! I bet half of the non-smokers drink!! Alcohol kills a lot more people than second hand smoke, at least smokers don't drive and kill whole families!! Cigs. don't make people act stupid and crazy like alcohol!! People smoke...Get over it!!
It's the non-smokers who think they are better than smokers! Isn't it selfish for you to try to tell us how to live our lives??! I agree with not smoking in public buildings but outside or anywhere else is none of your business!

I am an ex-smoker and I don't like it because it smells really bad. It fills my nose and I can't smell anything else. Plus, it makes me cough like I'm allergic now. It just drives me crazy. I don't confront people about it I just move away if it is bothering me. Yes, I am addicted to Yahoo answers. I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything I just hate it so bad. I can't believe after all these years that people continue to smoke and say they like it. My mom watched her mm and best friend both die of lung cancer but she's still at a pack a day. It is sad I think.

Non-smokers do get second hand smoke. They complain because they think THAT is the ONLY thing in this world that would make them sick. It's not and they need to get over it. That question makes me want to go light one up!

Non-smokers seem generally to be people who like to judge others. They could just as easily be against drinking because it, too, has adverse effects both on the drinker and on others (a person who is hit by a drunk driver). Yet non-smokers, especially those who were once smokers, really give smokers a hard time. It has to be their psychological make-up.

The last part of your question is the entire problem. Many non-smokers were once smokers. As a matter of fact, most hard-lined non-smokers were once smokers. Many and I'll venture to say most of them only ceased smoking because it in some way affected their health.
Now that there is all of this information about the perils of cigarettes many are frightened about second-smoke. I was just advised to wear a face mask to ward off the effects of those who smoke in my house. I was just diagnosed with bronchitis and have much difficulty breathing. My family members are not asked to smoke elsewhere, but they tell me, we don't want anything to happen to you, stop smoking. I consider myself as having quit, until the urge strikes me to smoke. Slowly I'm cutting down to quit, but its fear that generates them. I'm only doing this because I am unable to breathe.
Those who have never smoked are not half as anal as those who have quit.

Because too many people feed on ways to feel superior to others. Non-smokers picking on smokers is just another example in the long, sordid history of human beings being self-righteous and catty.
By the way, I am a non-smoker.

I smoked for many many years and quit back in October 1986. The dumbest thing I ever did in my life was start and the smartest thing was to quit. I went cold turkey. All that crap on the market is just that. My problem is I gained a little weight and I cannot stand to be around smoke. How ironic but it is very true. I have a buddy who still smokes and I have tried and tried to get him to quit but he won't. He will die of lung cancer. My aunt smoked for many years and she died of lung cancer. She was with an oxygen tank in her last days. How sad. It is such a nasty habit and very expensive now also. When I was in the military a pack of cigarettes cost 16 cents. I wish I could reach one individual and tell them how unhealthy it is for them to keep doing this to their body. I personally try to avoid folks who smoke but I respect all people. I just don't want to be around it because second hand smoke is nasty too and people can die from that too.

Right or wrong, get used to it. It's the way the world is turning. There are many places where it is illegal to smoke. Just pick yourself up and wander outside. At least you won't have to hear it when you're smoking outside with other like minded people. You must know it's a bad thing for everyone and causes disease. It's pretty hard to argue this one.
