ABSOLUTELY! They are being totally unreasonable. You wouldn't believe the problems I've had with my daughter getting her ears pierced. First of all she wasn't allowed to do PE with her earrings in. I kicked up a fuss (saying I couldn't believe their attitude given the number of obese kids there are today) and eventually they gave in. Now they won't let her do swimming unless she takes her earrings out. For god's sake - they're tiny studs, what's the big deal??? It's complete nonsense - I can understand the comment about ears hanging off but EVERY girl I knew at school had her ears pierced and there was none of this molly coddling! How many girls (or boys for that matter) do you know who've had their ears ripped off??? There is nothing in my daughter's school rules about all this and I've had a hell of a job getting her ears to heal because of the constant removing of the earrings.

Sorry - rant over - but all this nonsense really pi**ed me off!

No.

We all have a responsibilty to our own AND each other's health and safety.

The thinking is 'What if the back comes off? What if someone else's child stands on it and is injured?'

Who is to blame? The school will be for allowing it. The parents will be for insisting on it. The child will possibly feel bad for causing it although allowed to by school and parents. Who will pay? It wasn't an accident as someone allowed it.

We all want freedom, but at the expense of someone else's pain? You could argue that driving fast is your right and to be allowed but most people understand an accident then IS their fault.

There is a story of a child who got septicaemia from standing bare foot in a hall on the back of an earing. I have been unable to verify it.

Two websites below. The school one is very reasonable.

Yes. As long as they are small. Does the school have a policy regarding earrings? What state do you live in. Here in California they could never get away with that. Plus do the teachers wear earrings? Email me im very interested in your reply.

Your daughter should have the choice, but if the school is saying no on health and safety grounds then I can understand their view point, as seeing a child's ear torn open because they got their earing stuck is not nice. The child who I saw it happen too has never worn earings again.

Why let your ten year old get her ears pierced in the first place? Next it will be make up and high heels and before you know it by the age of 13 she'll want a baby (as she at the time will understand it) as a fashion accessory. Let her live a proper childhood.

What a thing to do to your daughter to make her the centre of attention on this matter at school (sticking plasters on her ears indeed).

Their rules are their rules and you deliberately went against them.

I think you want your daughter excluded so she ends up as ignorant and ill educated as yourself.

You are the unreasonable one and the sooner you become aware of this the better, for you as well as, your daughter

i remember someone at school who chocked on and swallowed somebodies earring at dinner time, they were taken to hospital and their parents sued the school.... after that earrings. rings , necklaces were banned.... what would you think if this was your daughter ? accidents happen or would you be sueing ? ... and besides if they let kids wear jewellery one thing would lead to another and a few years later theres always one who would take it too far and come to school dressed like a punk rocker with nose studs and worse... but their main issue here is for health and safety reasons

If you are in Britain, just tell them its part of your religious beliefs to have your daughter's ears pierced and that you will complain to the LEA and go to the local press. That usually does the trick. Joking apart, they are making a big deal out of it. Stud type earrings are usually allowed.

Most schools do give a copy of the school rules when you join the school. I know in the school I work there is a no jewelry policy.
The girls have started wearing studs and Small sleepers lately. It is a health and safety issue.

School policy should be followed. Once a child is enrolled in a school, it means the parents agree with and support the school's policies.

Is it necessary to wear earrings in school? Your child can wear her earrings after school.
