It's just the way your brain interprets the information. Your brain doesn't just see things--it tries to make sense of things. What you're used to seeing is a black image on white paper, so you see the black image first and for the first few minutes that's all you see. Then after your brain has had time to analyze it a little more, that's when you can see the white shape.

It's an optical illusion we learned about it in Psychology. I think it involves the rods and cones of the eyes. We looked at an American Flag...if you stared at the flag for a long time and then looked at a white wall you could see the flag in different colors.

Its an optical illusion. You are looking at color patterns which are being stored in your short term memory. When you make the quick shift to the wall, your short term memory is still seeing that image and it shows negative on the wall which is why you see it.

i cant believe you don't know how it works. What your looking at is a negetive image of jesus, if you stare at it long enough, it puts an imprint on you retinare. if you look at say a wall, your brain reverses the colours, simple illusion.

IT IS REALLY KOOL HUH, THE IMAGE ACTUALLY GETS KIND OF IMPRINTED ON YOUR EYE AND THEN WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE CEILING OF A WALL IT WILL PROJECT BACK WHAT IS ON YOUR EYE
