anthropomorphism
(from the Greek anthrôpos, for human, and morphé, for shape)
A form of personification (applying human or animal qualities to inanimate objects) and similar to prosopopoeia (adopting the persona of another person), is the attribution of human characteristics and qualities to non-human beings, objects, natural, or supernatural phenomena. Animals, forces of nature, and unseen or unknown authors of chance are frequent subjects of anthropomorphosis.

Personification is the literary device which turns an idea into a specific person, as when death is referred to as "the grim reaper". Just giving an idea, or an object, human-like characteristics is called anthropomorphizing.

I would rather, as a Writer use the term "Metaphoric" wherein the term Personification is correct, there may be a gray area for you. So take it on board or not...I have written and published. Think for yourself, a lot of these answers given are TELLING you what to do.

Giving a human characteristic to an inanimate merchandise is properly referred to as "anthropomorphic personification". It ability, actually, changing it to be human, i think of. consequently giving an characteristic of an animal to an inanimate merchandise would desire to be "zoomorphic personification." notice: while saying "zoomorphic", or "zoological", you're saying "zoh oh morphic" or "zoh oh logical". basically a style of demanding little hangovers from the classic Classical languages.

I would have gone with personification, but after reading the other answers, the anthro-whatever-it-is sounds plausible, too.
