They were all Christians yet did not want non Christians to be persecuted for their beliefs. Congress is still "opened" with a prayer, as has been done for >200yrs.

Some were Deists, which basically is belief in God, but God is removed and not involved in human affairs. Many that were Christian were in the Congregational Church.

Some where Puritans, Most all were Christians. It doesn't really matter though because they believed in the strict seperation of church and state.

many of them were deists. Some where christian.
