Counting altered states? Infinite!

The United States of America has 50 offical states and some territories (Ex: Puerto Rico).

HOWEVER, "America" also comprises North and South America and "State" can also mean country!

In that case, America has more than the following states from north to south (My apologies to island states for leaving them out of the mainland list!):

Canada
USA
Mexico
Belize
Guatamala
Honduras
El Salvador
Nicaragua
Costa Rica
Panama
Venezuela
Columbia
Guyana
Suriname
French Guiana
Ecuador
Peru
Brazil
Bolivia
Chile
Paraguay
Argentia
Uraguay

The island states include
Cuba
Jamaica
Haiti
The Dominican Republic
Trinidad
Tobago

I may be incorrect in assuming that the other islands are territories of other states... So the number should be at least 29 (sovereign) states of the Americas.
