There appears to be no logic to it!!

It used to be that the Champion used to open the first game against someone from the same group, now, however, its the host country against someone in the group, the order in which a country is chosen depends on the order in which the countries are chosen at the WC lottery. The first two countries put into a group are the first two to play, then usually either the same day or the next day the other two teams of the same group play.

The host nation always play the first game, against a picked team from the same group.

I believe whatever team is the host country plays the first match. Who they will play first is just according the the draw of the tournament.

The first match is played by the home team against the team that is their first match. There isn't any real science behind it.

it´s not logic, they flip the coin! (wel,, not the coin, but they do some sort of soccer bingo, actually).
