Develop an interest in the subject (even though that's hard for some topics). Study, study, and study. A lot of so-called "smart" people are really just "educated" people. They read a lot and study a lot, and thus know a lot. Being smart is an all-around approach. Book smarts, street smarts, common sense all come into play. Brush up on the books, but learn all of life's lessons early also.

Study smart not hard. Anyone can memorize facts given enough time. But, being smart is more than just regurgitating facts back onto a test. If you spend too much time studying you will be missing out on many activities. School is all about time management. Read books on how to study correctly. Learn memory tricks. People learn in different ways. Figure out the best ways to maximize your learning efficiency. Being interested in the subjects you are studying also helps.

Study. I don't mean sit and read. Booooooring. Make study guides of key terms from the book and ask the teacher what is best to study. Most teachers will drop you hints of what is on the test if you show interest after class or something. Very simple, plus sucknig up is always good. Then, if you're not real book smart, like myself, you can just study those few things you're 90% sure are on the tests.
Also, DO YOUR HOMEWORK if it's part of your grade. It's free points and then the tests don't matter as much.

I don't know if you can make yourself smarter. But you can learn how to concentrate better, how to focus on what you're doing and not let yourself get distracted. Practice this skill, say for about fifteen minutes at a time to begin with, then for longer periods. You may need to turn off the music, or tell your friends that you can't talk on the phone right now; whatever makes it easier to concentrate, that's what you have to do. Learn to concentrate and the rest will come much more easily.
It also helps to have some water (not soda!) and healthy snacks to munch on while studying -- some fruit, a small handful of peanuts, maybe veggies and dip or whole-grain crackers.
Good luck and stay in school.

Well you should study but in order to NOT overwhelm yourself you should simply always keep up with all your classes in school. There is no reason you shouldn't do all your homework and classwork. You should realize that friends are great but they often don't have the same priorities as you do. If your priorities vary then you should reevaluate your friendship. You should surroung yourself with people that you want to be like and admire. People should be able to tell what you are like just by looking at your friends.
Also, you should always push yourself beyond your limits. Take the hardest classes you can because even if you struggle, the lessons you learn will help you either way.
Being organized also helps. Hope this helps

Read around the subject use other text books, internet, revision guides.
Dedicate time out of your life just to read over your school work.
make notes on the subject, talk it through with others. If you dont understand ask your teacher, they are there to help you and often like it if a student asks questions about the subject area.
At exam time, dont leave revision till last minute, build up to it.
Not everyone is super smart, just try your best and no one can fault you.
Good luck

Pay attention in class. If you don't understand something, ask. Keep asking until you understand more clearly.
When it comes to revision, switch off any distractions such as the TV or radio. Revise little but often. It's easier to retain information in smaller amounts rather than cramming your head with lots of information that would get jumbled up in your head.
