Oh I read about this in the papers! Total waste of time!!! They're putting boxes outsidee of hospitals and police stations to put you're weapons? Yeh if I commit a murder, that's exactly where I'll hide the evidence! And I don't think it will make criminals change their whole lives! (I do hope we're talking about the same thing!)

an absolute waste of time as a way of getting knives of the street
but possibly a good way of getting publicity about the youth knife culture that exists.
Proof that it does not work can be seen on the news everyday,
today for instance on the news another tragic death, a fifteen year old boy going home from a night out fataly stabbed in the chest.
what would help to clear knives from the streets is a zero tolerance attitude by the police if they did random stop and search patrols and anybody found carrying a knife gets four years in prison.

Personally I think these amnesties are a complete waste of time.
The people who are going to use a knife against someone will not hand in any knives they own. The knives that are handed in would only be those purchased for genuine reasons such as camping, climbing, fishing etc.
Even after an amnesty knives will remain readily available for criminals to obtain.

I think these things can make a small difference because there will be people who use knives and will give them up. There will, no doubt, be those who won't give them up or may do but then will go and get another one. It is a good idea in theory but the only way it could really work would be if everyone was made to give them up and couldn't get hold of any more.

I think its a big waste of time the people that are willing to use a knife aren't very well going to walk into a police station and hand them in

De-criminalization and proper treatment for class A users might have more impact on street crime. Unless of course the authorities have a vested interest in the cocaine trade.
