I have Cerebral Palsy. I got SSI which is similar. From the official application date, to the final day when I got my first check it took 3 months. Plus I asked an attorney who told me that the first application is an always a denial automatically. So save your paperwork and send all proofs the second time. You have to fill out the application, be examined by a social security doctor, etc. So at the fastest it is 3 months. I've heard stories it can take much longer. My dad got on the phone and yelled at my social worker because she kept trying to stall.
In my case, I'd had SSI before when I was a child so they already knew me from childhood. My handicap was very obvious. I lost SSI when I worked for a while, then had to go back on it when no one would hire me again.

At least 8 to 12 months. Your first application will most likely be turned down - file an appeal to the denial immediately.

1st: You have to request an appointment, with "Social Security" (because, they don't take "walk-ins"!)
2nd: You'll be interviewed, at length, by Social Security, to determine the "Quality of Life", you SHOULD receive!
3rd: You'll have to be evaluated, by physicians, psychologists, specialists....
Then, the "waiting process" begins....
(It, USUALLY, takes about -- ON AVERAGE -- 2 to 3 months, for all the data collected, to be processed!)
You'll, then recieve a letter, in the mail -- detailing WHAT kind of "benefits" you'll receive, and WHEN you'll receive them!
I know, from "first-hand" experience: I used to be on S.S.D.I. -- for 13 years!

well for me, i was accepted quickly, but it took a few months to get the first check. they will go back to the first day of disabilty or the first day you filed, depending on the case. i actually got 2 SSI checks foe $7.00 before the first SSDI check came. (then i owed back $14.00 lol) your medicaid will last for 2 years, then you qualify for medicare (oh joy). if you are still not getting much on SSDI, you can get your part B premiums paid or continue on medicaid. they will send you info on this.
if you a turned down, get a lawyer quickly, and refile. it can take many times before you get.
good luck .

It took my husband about 18 months because they kept sending him to see their drs, even though he was diagnosed in 1994 and worked until 2003. It was an extreme financial hardship on our family, we almost lost our house, went in to extreme credit card debt because I had to use credit cards for groceries. He has rheumatoid arthritis and an artificial knee, has been on chemotherapy for 7 years. I don't know why it took so long, but it was horrible for us.

It takes awhile ,apply now and be ready for a fight. Most people have to take it to court. If you apply now and have to go to court it will pay from the day you apply, which will pay for your lawyer.Good luck and God bless.
