I have been there many times, and everytime, the time pass so fast, and don't want to leave.
Let's start with geography! Jordan is next to Israel, not down. Israel: depends on the city, those with the majority of Muslims are NOT safe, not even for the Muslims themselves. Ask your relative, he will tell you how those areas look, the one that is mostly Muslims are not well kept. The area with mostly Jews and Christian are much better. There are many check points, the one that belong to the Arabs are much more respectful and polite to the visitors, than the one for the Jews, are not, they generally are rude, and most don't even speak English very well. You got to understand the Jewish side is always on edge who will bomb or attempt to kill their kids. I don't blame them. It is hard for both sides. :(
Jordan is safe, contrary to some who believe that Jordanian are for terrorism, they are not. There are so many visitors from around the world, and you WILL be treated will. To give you an example, At one time, they had a very bad water shortage, a hotel empted bottled water ' Evian' to fill the pool to make their guest happy. Jordan you will be very safe.
Egypt, you will also be safe, and treated well, they are the most friendly people in the Middle east, when you visit you will see. Just because they have some idiots here and then who do take violance into their hands, many of them don't and are very Good, Honest, Peaceful people. If you do visit, you will see, and will want to go back again.
Have lots of fun, Lucky you.

Jordan and Egypt are very safe I have been to both of those places and returned alive. Actually I'm in Jordan right at this very second in the capital which is Amman. Egypt is safe too but there are a lot of police men on the lookout for traffic violations.

As long as you're not a loud, belligerent American who attracts negative attention. You'll stick out and could be targeted by radical muslims if you're a Caucasian Jew or Christian, but I'd think prudent security precautions would keep you safer.

Just stay within the tourist tracks. You should be ok. Those coutries are full of crazy drivers -- you're more likely to be killed in a car crash than by a terrorist.
