Distance is what determines the guage of wire needed, 220VAC goes further than 110 VAC on the same guage. The distant guidelines can be found on the web under wire guage guidelines.

For a normal household current and run, 12-3 AWG (solid) will meet NEMA specs. For 220V and longer runs, use a larger gage.
