If I have icons that I don't use that often, I move them into a folder I created called "Unused icons" Right click on the desktop, Select "Create new folder" and name it whatever you would like. Go back to the desktop and open the new folder. Make it smaller by dragging the corner inward. Then click and drag the icons that you don't use that often into the window and drop them. It's not really necessary to "hide" them completely.

You can just right click them and delete them...they wont be deleted out of your computer, you could still use them by going through the Start menu. The icons on your desktop are all shortcuts and you can put them back on your desktop if you need to by right clicking > Send To > Desktop (create shortcut)

Most of the icons on your desktop are probably shortcuts. These can be safely deleted; then the software can still be accessed directly (for about the same amount of work that it would take to unhide them).
Look for a little black arrow on a white square on the icon; this shows it to be a shortcut.
