Overdrive is an extra gear that lets your engine run at a lower RPM at highway speeds.

Over drive should be turned off if you are pulling or towing a large load. It will burn more fuel, but it is better for the engine and transmission to run faster while hauling a load.

Overdrive is a gas saving feature in the transmission. When the trans is fully warmed up it will engage iteslf on highway speeds reducing the gear ratio for lower RPM's and greater highway speeds.

The Volvo 740 has an overdrive button on the top of the gear stick, basically its 5th gear but on a button.

To put it simple...it allows the engine to operate at a lower speed while the vehicle operates at a higher speed...

It is designed for saving gas when you are traveling for long distances on the highway (or similar).
