The answer depends on:
1) what activity you need the shoes for and
2) where in So Cal you live

Assuming that you are looking for running shoes, try one of these running shoe specialty shops:
http://www.runningtimes.com/rt/articles/?id=7077&c=397
http://www.runnersworld.com/runnerschoice/
http://www.runnersworld.com/retailers/retailers_us_al_co.html
http://www.runningnetwork.com/stores/california.html
http://www.fleetfeet.com/

Bring in a pair of your current running shoes and socks. A good running shoe store employee will ask you questions about your running, look at the shoes, and based on this information and your gender and size, will recommend shoes.

They will then watch you run in them (on the sidewalk, etc.) and ask you how they feel. They are looking for how much support the shoes give you for pronation/supination (the flattening of the arch when the foot strikes the ground). If all looks good, they will recommend them. If not, they will go back and get a different pair and watch you run in them until they find a pair that gives you the support you need.

I've always had good experience with 'Fleet Feet'.
