explode, doubtful, but i loved my beta too much and over fed him for a period of prolly about 6-8 wks, and he got so fat that his belly became very bouyant and he swam sideways in circles, then eventually just swam upsidedown for about a week before he died.

Fish will not explode if you feed them too often. Although you will find yourself having to clean the tank more often. They will definately deficate more; causing bad chemistry in the tank including high ammonia.
Also, keep in mind that fish have no memory. If you feed them, wait two minutes and feed them again, the fish will not remember they ate and will eat again. Weird, but true.
The rule of thumb is: sprinkle enough food on the tank that the fish can eat (all of it) in five minutes. If any food is left after 5 min, you are feeding too much.

sort of. overfeeding can lead to a swollen abdomen which presses against nearby organs. pressure on the lateral line and swim bladder (which control boyancy and equilibrium) can cause fish to swim funny (sink, float to the top all the time, float on it's side). enough pressure will cause the swim bladder to explode. if they don't die from that, they will die from the subsequent infection.
someone else mentioned dropsy, but that's not necessarily a symptom. (dropsy is fluid leaking into the tissue and causing the whole body to swell and scales to pinecone out. it's not a disease. it's a symptom of an internal infection - usually in a late stage.)

No.
What happens though is that the excess food is not eaten by the fish, and is decomposed by bacteria raising the nitrogen level in your tank. So you don't get to see anything spectacular, just a bunch of dead fish.

No. There aren't enough parts to actually explode.

They get abdominal swelling caused by an infection caused by overfeeding. This is called dropsy.
