cacti store water for periods of dry days,, some have ways of collecting small amounts of water from the air,, just think desert!! were it rains once or twice a year and then not very much!!!

Depends on what type of soil it is growing in. You can always get a moisture meter for not a lot of money and use it to measure the moisture an inch or two into the soil. If dry, water thoroughy......

but do not let it stand in water. Cacti like a drink as well as the next plant, but don't like to be wet. Cold and wet at the same time are their enemies.

Once a month is enough. Water well when you water.
