It seems like the book took place in the early 1900's the family members would have pics of them siting in a chair, it looks like if they were sleeping. My history teacher back in high school brought it to class. I think it was around the plague time.

I think it is called, "Victorian Death Photo" or something like that. They used to take pictures of their dead.
