At what point does 'being comfortable' in your own skin turn to vanity? What is it about vain people that winds you up the most?

Me... I wind people up...

If someone refers to me as not being old enough to buy a vodka/red bull... that triggers my vanity...

i look in the mirror... that triggers my vanity...
people gasp in awe at my very presence, when i pass them, sit in the pub next to them... oh how perfect are my teeth?

the mirror addresses me as 'your gorgeousness!'

i sign my cheques with an amazing autograph!!! (perhaps you should frame that...)

the fact i have graced your answers pages, is a blessing child!

winding you up yet cockney!!!????!!!

i know exactly what you mean...

got to admit though we are all guilty of it...!

Vanity is having an overly high opinion about yourself. There's nothing wrong with being comfortable in yourself, but when it gets to the point where you are just plain arrogant and prideful, people tend to not like you. It's that narcissistic attitude that people cannot stand.

What eventually happens with vain people is they stop caring for others. They are so me-centric that the world around them become oblivious.

We're all vain sometimes. Vanity means that you base your self esteem on what people think of you, especially in the looks department. Therefore you spend a lot of time making yourself look good, you can be obssesive with either your clothes, your face, your weight, your age..and you value good looks before anything else. But like I said, we're all a bit vain sometimes.

Being comfortable is when you look in the mirror and smile.
Being vain is when you blow yourself a kiss. ;o)

I guess the thing that winds me up most about people who are vain is the tendency to think that people who don't put all kinds of effort into looking their "best" are somehow sub-normal. This of course is a vast generalisation, but that's what I mean by calling it a tendency, rather than a certainty ;o)

I live in italy (i'm not italian) and here it's really normal that when people (both men and women) pass a shop window, they check themselves out. it cracks me up!! they're really vain here. i agree with the person who said that vanity is about basing your opinion of yourself on what others think of you.

being comfortable in your own skin has nothing to do with how you look, it's to do with how you feel about yourself.

the thing that winds me up about vain people? they take soooooo looooooong to get ready to go out!!

A good example of vanity is looking as bad as Celine Dion did, then spending thousands of dollars on plastic surgery only to end up looking so bad that your face seems to be made out of a jigsaw.
