Why is a bisexual man usually considered gay (by straight men)? A bisexual woman is bisexual, not gay, so what's up, guys?

Straight men (or at least the overwhelming stereotype of them) see any non-straight man as "gay" because he has an attraction to other men, and the fact that humans like having only two catergories for everything and no gray area (makes thinking easier). A bisexual woman, however, is a straight man's sexual fantasy, but they still don't understand what it means. A bisexual woman, in reality, is a woman who is attracted to both men and women. A "bi girl" in the (stereotypical) straight man's mind is a woman who will have sex that involves another woman, but will focus on the man as the sex object. The straight man likes to think that he can have 2 women at the same time who will focus on his sexual pleasure but still do things to each other that sexually stimulate the man. It is the most ridiculous double-standard I've ever seen...well, one of them, anyway.

That hasn't been my experience. Most of the bisexual men that I've known tend to prefer women, and so have been seen more as straight than either bi- or gay -- even though they are truly bi-sexual.

As for your experience, I can give a reasonable conjecture. Straight men are a lot more wary of having men attracted to them than women are of other women. It's a macho thing, I think, as well as being at least mildly homophobic (and extremely so, in some cases). Men like the thought of two women together; for most straight men, it turns them on (don't ask me why). But two men together is repugnant to them (for the reasons stated above). So when they learn a man in their acquaintance is bi-sexual, they put him in their "gay" category so as to be more aware of his actions and attitudes toward themselves.

The straight guys are homophobic, way back in school boys would tease each other about being gay so they learn the prejudice. I bet a lot of them experimented though.

Because homosexual activity is so taboo, especially among straight men, that for a straight man to hear that another man is open to sex/relationship with another man overshadows anything else they know about him. It is the only label they focus on. People have so many aspects to who they are, but once they find out he is not entirely straight, they are fixated on only that fact.

I believe there are no bi-sexual men, if they claim so its because they are on their way to be able to soon admit their homosexuality. Its just tough probably for young men expected to participate in predisposed heterosexual lifestyle knowing and hiding their true identity. I believe its the same with women as well, if the woman truly believes herself to love other women, not just experimental moments.
