Babies always suck their thumb and for years I have pondered why.

To pacify themselves.
They even do it in the womb, probably because their hands are in front of their face, and of course babies like to suck.

How cute :) In one of my ultrasounds, my baby had her foot in her mouth :) We couldn't resist and we found out that she's a little girl! I think 12 weeks is a little early. We had to wait all the way until 21 weeks!

there is a stage in childhood called the oral stage. In this stage children need to be breast fed. If they are not, or if they are not breastfed enough they resort to oral stimulation which is thumb sucking.
later in adulthood this manifests itself in smoking, pencil bitting, nail bitting and the like.
