How important is Silence in your lives?
Have you also experienced 'hearing' soft, distant, sweet music when in absolute Silence?
If so, what was the first thing that came in your mind?
Or, what was your perception about it?

since 1981 very important.
in that year i ride my bike on an all alone trip all across europe from april to end of may. the end was a trip to the northcape in norway. the tour back home leds me through finland - suomi.
near the lake inari i found a nice place to rest. the lake was frozen but sunshine 24hours a day the whole time. warm and a beautiful landscape. i parked my bike in a distance of about 4 km outside the road in a complete wilderness.
after my bike cooled, the cooking fire died and the noise from drivingwind fades in my ears - it takes a few minutes that i noted a complete silence around me. first impression: i lost my ability of hearing. jumping up, shouting, clapping hands - ok, ears are working. must have been a very funny performance.
i enjoyed the "no sound at all". no insects, no wind, no sound of floating water, no traffic-sound, nothing. sitting down, leaning against a small rock i watched the nature with no sign of human hands on it.
first thought: peacefull - endless - timeless.
i lost my feeling of time and on vacation i don´t wear a watch. don´t know how long i was sitting that way but than i became tired. rolled in a blanket i lay me down and fall into sleep.
as i woked up (must have been short after midnight b/c the position of the sun) i had a sound in my mind i didn´t know from where. it was a strange and distant sound that turned after a while into "hymn" by b.j. harvest. without words - only instrumental music.
my experience was: you don´t need a church and priest to be with god. and: how small problems seems. far away. thinking over this and that i found not expected solutions. i believe it was the morning of the third day i couldn´t stand that silence anymore. the lack of noise began to "hurt" me and i leave that place. the whole 3500 km back home i´ve had "hymn" in my mind.
i remember this often and try to find silence like that again. doesn´t work. i wouldn´t miss a second of these times. thank you for this Q ;-)

There is always sound in the world. What is cool about "silence" is the stilling of your mind. In that kind of silence the quiet sounds of the world (the natural world is particularly satisfying) can approach you in a totally different way and you can really feel yourself to be a part of a great tapestry of life, sound included.

sometimes, i feel like nothing else would cure my sadness than silence, it's very relaxing and it helps a lot of people. i did listen 'soft, distant, sweet music when in absolute Silence'. i was in my house, all alone, and i opened the windows and just meditated, while playing softly my guitar.

Sometimes silence is a good thing. Not all the time though. I think if something happened, like I went deaf or something, I would go absolutely crazy.

Silence is very very important. Silence is where I maintain my sanity. It is very healthy even if it is for 5 minutes. Everyone should take quite time out of there day to experience it.

Silence is a rare comodity. It's elisive and strong. It's effect on the mind and body are unequaled. It gives you space to step out of the box and analyze yourself. See into yourself. Hidden desires and thougts are best heard in silence.

Be silent! be silent! for love behaves contrary to normal; Here the meaning hides itself if you talk too much.
Deafened by the voice of desire you are unaware the Beloved lives in the core of your heart. Stop the noise and you will hear His voice in the silence.
