If someone is good of their job should get the promotions.

Yes, I think they should have first choice. They know the company well and understand how it operates. They've put in time there to deserve the first chance at the promotion. Sometimes it seems like it's not fair when it's YOU wanting the opening, but everyone has to start somewhere. And once you're in a company, then it will seem more than fair when you get first dibs.

Yes and no. If the person with seniority is the one that works the hardest, shows up on time and hardly ever calls in, then yes, they should get first dibs on a promotion. If the person with seniority is not the best candidate for the position (calls in a lot, shows up late, etc) then they should not have first dibs.

No, I think drive and personal skills should give you precedence.

If they've been there 20 + years and still don't do any more work now than they did at the beginning....then they don't deserve the promotion.

that only depends on their abilities. i know plenty of people who have worked at my job for years, but plenty of newer people come in and have more talent and drive to get the job done
