There have been several remakes. The original Carpenters song was 1970. I'm not sure when the following were released, but the following have remade the song:

Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote the words and music to the song "Close To You".Not Karen Carpenter.

While I didn't find any artists who covered the song in the 80's, I found one in 2002 and one this year.
2006 - Cassandra Wilson on her album "Thunderbird"
2002 - The Wallflowers on their album "Red Letter Days"
