Ok, so my b/f move to Portland, Or, thinking it will be better. It turned out super bad, and we have only been here for almost a year. My b/f is super depressed, and sits there and whines about his life, and how he wants to move back but can't. I mean...is it possible to go back to cali and have a better life, or am I living in a pipe dream world. I heard the economy is better there. My b/f is a graphic web desinger.....where can he find the best job and the best living situation?? Since we have been in Portland, we have been brutally scammed and totally want out of this **** hole.

Well, it sounds like perhaps your problems go deeper than just your geographical situation, kwim? I would be concerned about your bf being depressed - moving won't necessarily fix that, especially since CA prices are WAY higher than Portland.

I feel for you - I know how it feels to be somewhere you don't want to be. Hang in there.

I've been in a similar situation...actually, many things are similar. My boyfriend & I moved from northern CA to Portland & we've been here for about a year.

The first few months were...hard. The job market is tough up here and money was tight. But it sounds as if your boyfriend can really work anywhere, at home even. Has that ever interested him?

I found some book titles that may help him decide:

* The Creative Business Guide to Running a Graphic Design Business by Cameron S. Foote
* The Business Side of Creativity: The Complete Guide for Running a Graphic Design or Communications Business by Cameron S. Foote
* Inside the Business of Graphic Design: 60 Leaders Share Their Secrets of Success by Catharine M. Fishel

And I agree with another poster...it sounds as if the problems have less to do with geography than with something else.

Take time to explore Portland -- it's really a beautiful, awesome city once you delve into it. Also, try joining some online communities -- one I love is http://community.livejournal.com/damnportlanders/. The people there are very friendly & helpful. If you join, I'm burntblueseason

Hope that helps!

Being a psych major and also dealing with depression myself it could be several factors. It may be SAD. Which is Seasonal Depression and being from Cali myself and living somewhere cold I myself was more depressed. But tanning can help with that. Also can diet and exercise, since exercise releases endorphines that boost mood. But it may be other factors. Try counseling. Living in Cali is way more expensive than Portland. Maybe try another job outside his field of work part time, just to keep busy and to network with other people.

I don't know the whole situation. Why can't he (or you both) move back to California? If it's a matter of job, why doesn't he and you start looking and move back when one of you find a job? Nobody here can tell you if you are going to have good or bad life anywhere. Don't just sit there and get depressed. Start your action.

Web design can be done from anywhere, including your home. Why doesn't he start up his own business? Portland has got to be more cost effective than California.

It seems like the source of your problems is not the location but a personal one that needs to be dealt with.
