How do you feel about date auctions?

How is a date auction any different from selling yourself or prostitution? I'm not talking about sex - just the idea of putting yourself on the market for a price, and someone with highest bid gets to go out with you.

Thanks.

I personally don't like the idea, but it's very similar to regular jobs where you sometimes have to spend time smiling and nodding at your bosses ideas for no reason other than that you don't want to lose your paycheck.

A lot of people think date auctions are great because they can raise a lot of money for charitable causes that way.

As for myself, I couldn't stand to be auctioned off for even an evening, nor could I stand to bid on another human being who doesn't have much of a choice in who to go with. (It's much easier to quit a job you don't like than to leave a date that was set up to raise money for charity.)

And if it's not for charity, well, it's a way to make money I guess. I can't really say more about that. I just feel really bad for someone who would pay to go out on a date with someone. It just means they're more likely to overlook the people around them who might be much better dates.

Isn't that what legitimate escort services offer? How different is it (conceptually) than hiring someone to do yard work. The worker looks at the job to see if he/she is suited for it and can provide quality work. The employer evaluates the quote and maybe even takes a referral.

It might be useful if a person has a formal even to attend where it is (socially) required to bring a date. Let's say it is a female and she has no boyfriend at the time. For older (over 30) people, more and more are married. Does a woman ask her female friend to borrow her husband as an escort? When one is in high school or college almost everyone is single and about the same age making it much easier to find an escort to an event.
