Batteries, there's tons of info, and everyone knows what they are, so there's at least some interest. Plus they can be used to illustrate several chemistry concepts.

Food additives - EDTA chelates iron in ketchup, so that you don't get a bitter taste when you eat stuff with it.
Forensics - Luminol is a material that glows in the presence of iron, so it can detect blood by attaching to the homoglobin, another is ninhydrin, the material that's used to detect fingerprints

you can make a compressor or a fridgirator work more efficeintly by cooling it with ducts of cold water from another small compressor and that reduces electrical power
it needs a lot of work but i think its nice
