When an attacking player without the ball has less than two defenders (including the goalie) between him and the opposing goal and is closer to the goal than the ball and the ball is passed to him.
So if your team has the ball and you run ahead of the ball looking for a pass and you run past the last defenseman and only the goalie to beat, then you get the pass, you are offside. You can only be offside when the ball is played. You can run after a ball in an offside position as long as you were onside when it was played. It's a bit confusing.
Wikipedia has a good explaination too, with a diagram.

Offside is soccer occurs when a player from the attacking team moves ahead of the last defenders (before the goalie) before the player's teammate had a chance to kick the ball to his direction.

Offside is when the ball is passed to a teammate and the player is in front of the defending team before the ball was kicked. in order not to be offsides the player has to be behind or next to the defender before the ball is kicked. When the ball is kicked the offensive player can go ahead of the defense

Dear Don Fernando,
Very Simple:
Imagine team A is attacking and Team B is defending.for sure there is a space between B defenders and their goalkeeper.OK?
now A players should pass the ball to one of their players to score a goal.If the player who is going to receive the ball and score it locate between the above mentioned space,Then he is in Offside.
