I loved The Spirit Within when it came out. Is this new Final Fantasy DVD some type of sequel to the 2001 movie, or something totally different? While doing some research I found out there were some other Final Fantasy movies out there. Is it all one big serie or totally different stories?

Spirit Within and Advent Children are totally different storylines. As for the other movies im not completely sure.

As far as I have watched, all final fantasy movies are totally different from each other. The Spirits Within is a separate, stand alone final fantasy movie with no connections to any game ever except for the name Cid. As for Advent Children, it is a direct sequel to the Final Fantasy 7 game, starring the same characters of the game.

Not in the slightest. Advent Children is a motion picture sequel to the original Final Fantasy Seven game. I don't know what Final Fantasy game the Spirits Within is tied to. I heard it got so far off the plotline anyway that it didn't matter.

No it's not a sequal to The Spirits Within. It's the sequal to the FFVII game from 1999 about Cloud and Midgar and Sephiroth. It's about Cloud's life 2 years after Midgar's destruction.
