They are also known as the Mexica. The empire flourished in various stages of development for nearly 4,000 years before first contact with Europeans. In 1859, the lands were in vaded by the Spanish. Hundreds of thousands of Aztecs died of disease, most of smallpox. Two years later, in 1861, the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan was captured. Today, the land of Tenochtitlan is what you would know as Mexico City.
