New battery. The first time, the engine turns over slowly. I hear the engine is not runing smoothly, then dies. In rainly day, I have to start three time to get it started. If the engine is warm, it starts just fine.

I'm not an expert on Toyotas, but here are a few possible causes...you will need to have a mechanic check for them:

a)bad electronic control module chip controlling fuel flow
b)bad electrical connection to fuel pump or starter
c)weak/failing fuel pump (needs pressure checked)
d)failing EGR valve or oxygen sensor
d)clogged or partially clogged injector or injectors

If your check engine light comes on occasionally when the car is running I'm thinking D. You can take the car in and have them hook it up to a diagnostic machine that will read any and all electrical trouble codes. Hope this info helped a little.

I HOPE YOU HAVE CHANGED THE SPARK PLUGS SINCE 2001. IF NOT THAT COULD BE YOUR PROBLEM . SPARK PLUGS SHOULD BE CHANGED EVERY 30,000 MILES. AND NO LONGER THAN 50,000 MILES EVEN IF THEY SAY 100,000 MILES. MAKE SURE THERE IS NOT ACID BUILD UP AROUND YOUR BATTER CABLES. ITS NOT YOUR OXYGEN SENSER IF YOUR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HASENT GONE OFF. AND IF ITS NEVER STOPPED RUNNING WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD THEN ITS NOT YOUR FULE PUMP... JUST A START PROBLEM. THEN FOCUS ON THE PLUGS AND THE BATTERY. WAS YOUR NEW BATTER CHARGED FULLY WHEN YOU GOT IT? SOME BATTERYS SIT ON A SHELF FOR A LONG TIME AND LOOSE THEIR CHARGE. IF IT JUST STARTED HAPENING AFTER YOU BOUGHT YOUR BATTERY THEN CHECK CHARGE AND MAKE SUER YOUR BATTER HAS WATER IN IT. IF ITS LOW THEN ADD SOME MORE DISTILLED WATER. MY GUESS IS THE PLUGS. MY CIVIC DID THE SAME THING UNTIL I BOUGHT BOSH SPARK PLUGS THEN NEVER HAD PROBLEM AGAIN.

My '00 Camry was behaving the same until last month. Check the starter motor (about $450); may need to be replaced.

what kind of oil are u using? perhaps u should consider changing it to synthetic multi degree, like mobil 1. it keeps it's viscosity even when the engine is cold, so it doesn't need the heat to obtiain a degree of viscosity like regular oil. granted it's more expensive, but u'll have ur next oil change at 6,000 miles rather than 3 or 4,000 miles, like regular oil does.

You may have a weak fuel pump, take it and have it checked out.
