Should I take it to a paint and body or do it myself?

yikes... that's going to be a hard job. If I was you, I'd take it to a sandblaster and have them blast the old paint and rust off and then prime it. Then you can get it back and shoot a urethane or enamel paint on it...depending on your budget.

or, you could sand off the peeling paint and then shoot that special primer that turns rust black over the the rusty spots. Then prime the whole thing and topcoat. odds are the paint will peel in places and rust will come thru again, but it'll look much better for awhile.

It's labor intensive, so I'd just prefer to spend the money and have the sandblaster knock it off in an hour.

First you're going to need to sand blast it. You may need to use acid on the parts that are badly rusted. Fiberglass can be used to fix any holes it has in it. Then you repaint it.
