It is pretty old for a fish in a small tank, cared for by a child. That's really old, in fact; childhood hardly lasts that long. In a bigger pond, a carp (goldfish are carp) can live for many many years. Even though there are predators, and other dangers in the wild (carp can survive very cold winters because they have antifreeze in their blood), a large body of water is a better environment for the fish because the water habitat is also a "living" thing, with algae and fungus, and small paramecia and amoebae, etc. It is much easier for a the biology of a small tank to go off-kilter than for a bigger pool.
And speaking of dead goldfish, this might make you smile: A little girl was digging in her backyard next to a shoebox, and the neighbor-lady looked over the fence and said "why are you digging such a big hole?" and the little girl said "My goldfish died, I'm burying him". And the neighbor-lady said "that's very sad. But why such a big hole for a small goldfish?" And the little girl stops digging and looks up and says, "He's inside your cat."

Actually five years is NOT a long time for a goldfish. The longest lived goldfish on record was a whopping 41 years old! Although your friends' son did better than most people. A lot of goldifsh die an early painful death because people mistakenly keep them in bowls. Goldfish get VERY big and need a lot of space and clean water to stay healthy.

It isn't old at all. It was actually still pretty young.
When taken care in the proper conditions, a goldfish can live on average 20-25 years. The oldest goldie was 49 years when it finally passed.
Though I'm very sad to hear of the loss, I am happy that your son was able to take care of it that long. Most people can't even take care of a goldie for a week.

Goldfish can live 10 to 15 years. Sadly most die in a week because people don't know how to care for them.

No, goldfish can live to be 20+ and if given the right conditions it will. 5 years is longer then most though.
