how close is the countryside? I have been offered a job there and it seems ideal (good rail links, channel, not overly massive etc etc), but does the actual city as a whole differ from any other city in the UK, eg, B'ming'm, Exeter, Derby etc etc....
Thanks, I will be going there soon but just wanted to go armed with a little knowledge

It's a lovely city, there's Somerset countryside all around and the city's open and nice with a waterfront.
It's a nice, small city - much nicer than Birmingham, people are lovely and there's a lot of cultural heritage as well, and Roman history etc

It's quite a big city, lots of suburbs, but it's easy to get out into the countryside - lots of local trains. The Bristol channel near Bristol is a bit naff - think chemical works and power stations (at Avonmouth, etc) - but South of Bristol is great countryside, and you can get to Gloucestershire and Wales easily.
It's a very friendly place, loads of pubs, great social scene, good restaurants, etc.
I always found it far more relaxed than London and less dingy than Birmingham and Manchester. Not so close to the countryside as Exeter!
Only downside is that it can be a bit expensive to get a house / flat there - you can get cheap places out of town, but then you're not near the social life.

Great place, my sister moved there ten years ago. Great social screne. Short drive to London, Bath is only half an hour away and the devon seaside an hours drive. Very close to Glastonbury for next year if your going. Strange accent but nice people. Always seems to be hotter than anywhere else and plenty of bars, restaurants etc to sit outside. I would go in a Flash!

I have worked in many parts of the UK and the Bristol area was one of them, it is a great place, I have also worked at the other places you named, but Bristol was the best, I stayed at a place called Portishead, just outside Bristol and rental is quite cheap!
Good luck on your visit!
You may have a problem with the folks accent, they all sound like old farmers!! And keep well clear of the local 'scrumpy' cider!!

bristol is really/type of an severe priced city in spite of the undeniable fact that that's beautiful so in case you are able to have the funds for it that's properly worth it. in case your getting student loans/bursaries etc they'll conceal the fee of residing nonetheless. xxxx
