While registering for my baby shower, I noticed that different nipples had different "flows." As in "medium flow." Are there certain ages where these different nipples are useful? Do you start off with a slow flowing nipple, then graduate to a heavier flowing nipple?
Thanks in advance for your answers!

yes they are for different ages but now the have bottles that have have slow, med., and fast all in one!( you just twist the nipple to the speed you want) Start with the slow and once the baby is doing good with it and seems like him or her is sucking faster then you can go to med then fast. Good luck and CONGRATS on the baby!!!!!!

You're exactly right...you start off with slow flow nipples, then gradually move up once the baby is older. I used Playtex VentAire bottles with both of my kids, and they have only Stage 1 (slow) and Stage 2 (fast) nipples. Not sure about the medium, but it's a good idea. :) I started off with the Stage 1, then when they were about 7 or 8 months old, I switched to the Stage 2. If you give a newborn anything other than a slow-flow nipple, they'll take too much milk/formula in their mouths and choke on it. Make sure you replace your bottle nipples every 2 - 3 months as the holes in them do get larger from use/putting them in the dishwasher, etc. Good luck to you, and congrats on your pregnancy!

"medium flow" means that the nipple is almost open so the won't have to suck as hard as a "low flow" just don't get the one with the big hole in the middle of the nipple because the baby will choke because the liquid is coming out so fast. you don't want that to happen. well i hope you have good luck with the baby. by the way what is it a boy or girl?

well first of all, congrats. i have a 9 month old and ive found that she will only drink from slow flow nipples, anything bigger than that and she refuses the bottle. usually when babies grow they drink more and more milk and can handle more in their mouth at a time, thats why they make different nipples. you should start with the slowest flow first and gradually go up as your baby grows, or just stay at the slow flow like my little girl. good luck. :)

yes, there are nipples made for different flows. basically, you'll have to try different ones to find what your baby likes.
it's not so much the age, but how well your baby is eating.
the slow flow nipples are usually for newborns b/c they aren't used to eating yet and you don't want a whole flow of formula to come out and they choke on it. (imagine someone tipping a bottle to your mouth and you getting a steady flow...you gotta swallow sometime, right??)
so, start out with the slow flow nipples, but if it seems baby is having trouble and working too hard for the formula to come out you can switch to one that is medium flow and so forth....
congrats!!! and take care!

Yes, you are exactly right. that is what the flow is for. I used the slow flow for my son a little longer than recommended just because whenever i tried to get him into using the medium flow, he would get choked up. So really it depends on your baby, but do start out with the slow flow and work your way up depending on when your baby is ready.

It means that there are more holes, or the hole is bigger in the nipple. Makes it easier to get the milk out for the babies. I stuck to the mediums, the heavier ones seemed to 'drown' them. I have heard that the heavier ones make babies 'lazy eaters', they don't have to do much work, since the milk just flows on it's own. I think that would make it that much harder to get them on a sippy cup later, since the gaskets in them are pretty hard to get the liquid out. Some brands are harder than others, I actually have grabbed the cup and sucked on them.......needed some water! lol And I know just from me doing it, that they are! lol

The different flows in my opinion are stupid. with my son i always buy him slow flow and he adjustes it as needed. By sucking it expands the hole in the nipple so i let him deside how he wants it
