When mirrors were new they were very expensive. Only the very wealthy could afford them. If a servant broke one the master or Mistress would cause them so much grief that mirrors were considered bad luck. The owners encouraged this so that the servants would be more careful. Like most superstitions this one is a way of making people aware of a danger that mignt not be paid attention to unless threatened with bad luck.

I have broken mirrors and then said to myself "oh great! seven years of bad luck!" because that is what I'd always heard. But I never had any worse luck than was usual from it. One time a black cat crossed right in front of my car and stopped and gave me a very evil glance before he took off. Not two minutes later I got a ticket. So I am always Nice to black cats, now.

I've always been careful around mirrors, ladders and black cats. A friend who is a creative artist put a new spin on on the tale. She says,if you take the pieces and make an art piece, cover a flower pot, etc, you will have good luck. I liked the story.

may be true or may not be. but it doesnt matter. ofcourse you are not going to break a mirror out of will. next time be careful.... you ll avoid badluck if it is true. if false... its the mirror's expense thats your loss. the whole point is.. no need to worry :)... good luck to u!!!
