Technically we are close to cloning a human, since it's been done with other mammals. We're a lot further from an android, especially if Microsoft is working on the software! The Japanese, however, are pretty far ahead with robotics - they have bots that can run (i.e. both feet are momentarily off the ground), and they are working on robotic servants to help elderly people who are living along with household chores. (I could use the dishwashing robot for myself right now!) And they have robots that can understand speech in a way that takes your intonation and head gestures into account. But to have an android like "data" in Star Trek I think would take a lot more development in understanding human interaction.

What we will probably see sooner is where humans have some electronics built into their body, to enhance memory, etc. A lot of people think this is a weird idea, but many of us are already attached to gadgets so they might as well be built in!

It depends on how lenient you are with the definition of android. Personally, I'm impressed with the animatronics in It's a Small World or Pirates of the Carribean. I think artificial limb technology, battery technology, and computer technology will continue to improve in my lifetime to the point that building an android would be as simple as by a bunch of parts at Radio Shack.

Harvard has just decided to start cloning humans embryos for stem cell harvesting.

The Japanese already have robots that look human, "androids" of a sort. However, it will be long time (if ever) before we develop software to replicate the human brain.

I think that human clones exist already as part of experiments.
Android...it depends on what you call an android, there are many out there but obviously they dont have the capacity and intelligence of a human brain.

I don't see why it wouldn't be possible and if you go to www.sciam.com you'll read some amazing stuff about androids.
Hiroshi Ishiguro is creator of humanoid robot Repliee, modeled after a human newsreader.
I have the "Scientific American" magazine and seen the image of the android, uncanny likeness to the news reader who was standing beside the andorid of herself. He intends to create a male now, of himself.

Michael Jackson was cloned from Janet, but there seems to be problems with this first clone.

Yes, absolutely. Androids are a possibility at this very moment.
