for the best value/performance ratio, i suggest you try checking out aldi or lidl... i know it sounds crazy, but they actually use good quality components from well-known manufacturers such as pioneer and samsung... you don't end up spending money on a brand name.

i got my laptop from lidl about 18 months ago and it was as good a spec as anything out there - and it's still up there, no problems whatsoever.

it also has a three year guarantee, which dell will charge several hundred quid for...

otherwise, toshiba machines are generally regarded as being very reliable.

of course, if you're not doing a lot of gaming, pretty much any laptop will do the trick nowadays. i would advise against a laptop with shared graphics memory however...

try and get one that has its own dedicated graphics card and video memory...

I bought my laptop from Gateway, and their tech support is excellent. I bought my son a Dell computer and will never ever buy anything from them again. I don't care if they were selling them for $1. Their tech support is PUTRID- you get some guy who can hardly speak english and can't understand you. My Gateway laptop was bought in 2004 and is working great- I renewed my warranty for a small fee, and I have peace of mind that if I need tech support, it's right there. Good luck!
